After a lengthy break since their Field of Vision festival in August, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard returned to the stage for a special debut-heavy “rave set” that leaned heavily on their experimental side. Held at Federation Square in Melbourne, Australia, the performance was a free event and was announced just five days in advance.

Following an opening set from former Altin Gün singer/keyboardist Merve, KGLW gathered around their modular synth table, affectionately named “Nathan,” and kicked things off with reimagined versions of “The Silver Cord” and “Kepler-22b”, which featured Ambrose Kenny-Smith playing congas. This was quickly followed by a trip through “Gilgamesh” into the debut of “Set”, which saw Ambrose switch to saxophone.

The band treated fans to several more debuts, including “JOJAM”, “2.02 Killer Year” (during which Joey called out “Free Palestine”), “Blue Morpho”, and “Butterfly 3000”. The latter two tracks flowed smoothly into the heavy and atmospheric “Extinction”, with Joey Walker switching back to guitar, before concluding with the chaotic and almost punk-influenced “The Grim Reaper”, which included unexpected nods to other tracks, such as “Torture Chamber”, “Black Market Bargain”, and quotes from the Beastie Boys‘ “Sabotage” and Limp Bizkit‘s “Rollin’”.

Next up, King Gizz will play another rave set in Manchester on Halloween to kick off a U.K./Europe tour before returning to Australia in December for a series of symphony collaborations and rock shows. Find upcoming tour dates and tickets here.
