King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard will have a supply of Narcan (which is used to reverse overdoses caused by opiates) on hand for the entirety of the band’s tour thanks to This Must Be The Place.
The band told fans in its email newsletter that the organization “is equipping our entire tour with Narcan!” KGLW continued, “In response we are donating $10,000 from the band,” and went on to encourage fans to donate as well. “If you’d like to support this amazing cause, click here to donate and it will go directly to supporting making sure this life-saving medication is available at shows all across the US.
“Let’s look out for each other and be kind to those around us and let’s keep the good times rollin’.”
Gizzard’s announcement reflects a broader, societal spike in accidental drug overdose deaths caused in part by the prevalence of the opioid Fentanyl in the street drug supply. A recent study of music festival fatality data found drug overdoses to be the most common cause of death at music festivals by far (when you exclude the extreme anomaly of the Route 91 Harvest shooting in 2017, which resulted in 60 deaths).
Most venues already have Narcan on hand to revive anyone experiencing an overdose, and many jurisdictions have passed laws encouraging or requiring venues to stock the drug, particularly in areas where opioid overdoses are common. If you see someone who you think needs help, don’t hesitate to act, and if you plan to partake, take precautions to avoid unnecessary risks: Don’t take drugs from strangers, test everything, stay hydrated, and bring a friend.
