Kitchen Dwellers traveled through the Nine Circles of Hell to deliver news of their fourth studio album, Seven Devils. The concept album inspired by Dante Alighieri‘s epic poem “The Divine Comedy” is out on March 1st, 2024.

With Seven Devils, Kitchen Dwellers set out to guide listeners on a journey of introspection. As banjoist Torrin Daniels explained in a promotional video for the LP, “If Wise River is an album of the outdoors and of escapism then I think that this album is the musical result of looking inward.” There is a song representing each of the Seven Deadly Sins on the 12-track album, with other compositions drawing inspiration from “The Divine Comedy”.

Alongside the album announcement, Kitchen Dwellers shared the title track “Seven Devils (Limbo)”. Debuted onstage back in 2021, the song hears the Dwellers temporarily escaping from the Inferno for a brief trip through the Pacific Northwest with references to Portland, the 101, and standing out in the Oregon rain. Giving this song the studio treatment still allows for a spacious galaxy grass breakdown, a launchpad for plenty of live renditions to come.

“The name ‘Seven Devils’ is something I found throughout our travels as a band,” guitarist Max Davies said of the single. “Not only are there several places in the Carolinas that hold this namesake, but also along the Northwest Pacific coast as well. Even beyond this is the ‘Seven Devils’ mountain range, located in western Idaho along the Snake River. Not only is this name found in many places, but it appears to also come from many sources. Some are Biblical in nature – i.e. the seven demons cast out of Mary Magdalene – while others hold Native American origins. The lyrics of the song pull reference from all of these stories.”

After working with producer/Vulfpeck guitarist Cory Wong on 2022’s Wise River, Kitchen Dwellers teamed up with Grammy-winner Glenn Brown (Billy Strings, Greensky Bluegrass) who recorded, produced, mixed, and mastered Seven Devils. The band recorded the new album at GBP Studios in East Lansing, MI.

“We knew going into this project that we wanted to work with someone that was really going to push us,” Davies said. “Glenn has a way of working the music out of you in a way that is all his own – creating songs out of nothing. Many tunes on this record were written as a result of improvising and trying out different ideas. Each song contains a piece from everyone in the band. Every tune on the record holds musical ideas from each one of us. For this reason, we think it sounds the most like us that any record has.”
