On Thursday, June 5th at NYC’s Stage 48, there will be from beginning to end, one of the most talented single-show lineups that a jam/funk aficionado could ever ask for. High-powered Connecticut funk act, Kung Fu, will be bringing their super impressive chops to Stage 48 for a headline performance that will feature the band playing a set with sit-ins from The Shady Horns – Ryan Zoidis and Eric Bloom of Lettuce and Pretty Lights – along with opening sets from the sex-groove powerhouse quintet The Nth Power, and the Jennifer Hartswick Band.
Kung Fu is a five-piece funk ensemble, featuring Tim Palmieri (guitar), Todd Stoops (keys), Robert Somerville (tenor sax), Chris DeAngelis (bass), and Adrian Tramontano (drums). Their live show is full of masterful musicianship, creativity, and improvisation, which all tend to lend themselves to turning the show into an all-out dance party. Their most recent album, Tsar Bomba (check out our review here), is beyond impressive, combining both creative exploration and complex musical layering so eloquently, all the while paying homage to 70’s funk with a modern sensibility. Add The Shady Horns (of Soulive fame) and you are in for a set of some LETHAL FUNK.
Since joining their collective forces in early 2013, The Nth Power has taken the music scene by storm. Full of accomplished musicians in their own right, such as drum goddess Nikki Glaspie (Dumpstaphunk, Beyoncé), the soul power of Nigel Hall (Lettuce, Warren Haynes Band) on vocals and keys, out-of-this-world guitarist and vocal sex doctor Nick Cassarino (Jennifer Hartswick Band, Big Daddy Kane), Nate Edgar (John Brown’s Body) laying down some fat bass lines, and djembe guru Weedie Braimah (Toubab Krewe, Kreative Pandemonium), The Nth Power has been throwing down memorable set after memorable set in support of their debut 6-song EP Basic Minimum Skills Test. The album was straight-up hot, and unlike most traditional funk albums and funk shows, the group transcends the typical pigeon-hole classification that most groups are subject to. While the group can hit hard and get dirty, they are capable of taking their music to an ethereal place that is difficult for many bands in the genre; the music can get very light and airy, and can take you to another place. The Nth Power is a band that needs to be seen to truly understand.
Many know her as the killer trumpet player powerful vocals that lend her talents to the Trey Anastasio Band, but Jennifer Hartswick has established herself as one of the most sought after musicians in the scene today, with her undeniable versatility. With her last album, Ocean Floor, which also featured Nth Power member Nick Cassarino, Jennifer was showed a smart, sexy, sultry side that isn’t very often showcased with her work for other artists, on top of displaying her natural ability to compose and play bandleader. This set will warm you up quite nicely; don’t miss it.
