Kurt Vile stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday for a pair of performances, including a John Prine cover. The singer-songwriter was on CBS promoting his new album, (watch my moves), available now.

First up was a live take on “Mount Airy Hill (Way Gone)” with his backing band, The Violators. Vile exudes the breezy nonchalance of a guy you met outside a 7/11, and the (watch my moves) track’s refrain brings that 21st-century Jeff Spicoli vibe home with the mantra, “I been around but now I’m gone / Been gone but now I’m way gone.”

Next, for a web-exclusive off-air performance, Vile turned in a solo cover of John Prine’s “How Lucky”. First found on the Singing Mailman’s 1979 classic Pink Cadillac, Vile actually recorded a duet of the song with Prine for the former’s 2020 Speed, Sound, Lonely (KV), which also hosts a solo cover of “Speed Of The Sound of Loneliness“. The duet with Kurt was the last recording Prine made before his death in April 2020.
