Musicians from multiple generations gathered to celebrate the legacy of Jerry Garcia on Friday as slamgrass veterans Leftover Salmon and jam upstarts Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country descended on The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY for Jerry Daze Between.

Named after the period of “days between” Garcia’s birthday on August 1st and the anniversary of his death on August 9th, Jerry Daze Between honored the enduring influence of the late Grateful Dead guitarist with a night of music culminating in Leftover Salmon’s full recreation of 1970’s Workingman’s Dead album, dubbed Workingman’s Salmon. The festivities began with an opening set by progressive bluegrass quartet Sicard Hollow at the intimate and suitably named Garcia’s, located inside The Cap.

Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country then got the main room rocking with a set of mostly originals. The Nashville-based band’s fusion of country and psychedelic rock was a fitting tribute to Garcia, who was inspired by the sounds of bluegrass, country, and folk. Donato and his gang slipped in the traditional “Jack-A-Roe”, a Grateful Dead and Cosmic Country staple, in a nod to their jam forefather and the long musical lineage they inherited.

The celebration continued with Leftover Salmon, who dove straight into Workingman’s Salmon with “Uncle John’s Band” and “High Time”. The band then welcomed Daniel Donato to join in for the rest of the set, which featured the remainder of the album with a cover of Bonnie Dobson‘s “Morning Dew” added, plus “I Don’t Know You” by New Riders of the Purple Sage, Salmon originals “Aquatic Hitchhiker” and “Gulf of Mexico”, and an “All Night Ride” encore.
