Leftover Salmon has announced the addition of a new band member, Charlottesville multi-instrumentalist Jay Starling.

In a post on social media, Leftover Salmon frontman Vince Herman extolled the band’s new member and highlighted his prestigious musical pedigree. “Jay comes from a legendary bluegrass family and we are head over heels excited about having him officially join the band,” he wrote. “Keys, dobro and an incredible voice all in one guy! Welcome to the circus, Jay.”

Jay Starling sings and plays dobro and keyboards with the Charlottesville-based cover band Love Canon. His father, the late John Starling, was the co-founder of bluegrass outfit The Seldom Scene.

Starling took to social media to express his excitement, recalling the first time he saw Leftover Salmon back when he was in high school. “I know many of you saw this yesterday, but I’m now an official member of Leftover Salmon!” he wrote. “I remember seeing them at Wolf Trap in high school and being blown away. Its an honor to join this band that, like Seldom Scene, was so influential in changing the sound and landscape of the genre. It feels like something has come full circle and I know John Starling is smiling from across the great divide.”

As performers on similar live circuits, Jay Starling and Leftover Salmon have crossed paths on various occasions through the years. Below, watch Starling join Leftover Salmon for John Hartford‘s “Steam Powered Aeroplane” at FloydFest 2016.
