D’Angelo, David Byrne and Panda Bear are several of the artists topping the bill for the Red Bull Music Academy Festival New York, a month-long music series that will take place from May 1st to 31st.
The event comes on the heels of the hugely successful Red Bull Music Academy that took place in New York in 2013.
Set to become an annual homage to New York City’s musical history, this year’s featured performers will also include Hudson Mohawke, Tim Hecker, Napalm Death, Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip),Kele Okereke (Bloc Party), François K, Robert Henke, The Haxan Cloak, Gunplay, Wolf Eyes, Regis, Optimo, Daedelus and many others.
With events taking place everyone from traditional venues to the streets of NYC, the series will also include club nights, lectures, art installations and more.

May 1 – Bounce Ballroom: Opening night of the festival will go down at the Brooklyn Bazaar with a journey through the evolution of U.S. club dance styles guided by the iconic DJ’s of the respective eras.
May 2 & 3 – Atomic Bomb! The Music Of William Onyeabor: TheBAM Howard Gilman Opera House will host the U.S. premiere of ‘Atomic Bomb! The Music Of William Onyeabor,’ co-presented with BAM and Luaka Bop. David Byrne will join Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Kele Okereke (Bloc Party), Luke Jenner (formerly of The Rapture), Pat Mahoney (ex-LCDSoundsystem), Joshua Redman and The Lijadu Sisters will perform the songs of Nigeria-born, mysterious synth-funk pioneer William Onyeabor.
May 9 – The Four Corners of the Clash: The crews from New York’s 2013 Red Bull Music Academy Culture Clash will reunite at Baby’s All Right in Williamsburg to celebrate the spectacle’s first anniversary. The party will include sets from winning crew Trouble & Bass, as well as QueBajo, Max Glazer and Kenny Meez from Federation Sound.
May 10 – Brooklyn Flea Record Fair: The twice-annual record fair held at the Brooklyn food fest Smorgasburg will feature DJ sets by Autre Ne Veut, Sandra Electronics, Optimo, Jesse Cohen from Tanlines and more.
May 10 – Robert Henke’s Lumière and The Haxan Cloak: Robert Henke, the acclaimed German electronic composer and founding member of Monolake, will bring his laser and sound show to the U.S. shores for the first time.
May 11 – Larry Levan Street Party: As part of the local initiative to rename King Street as Larry Levan Way, the Red Bull Music Academy will pay tribute to the legacy of Levan with sets from David Depino, Francois Kevorkian, Joey Llanos and several special guests.
May 14 – A Night Of Improvised Round Robin Duets: A carry over from the 2013 installation, the Round Robin Duets will again include a unique evening of live improvisation where unexpected musical encounters and a wide range of sounds from the realms of jazz, electronic, rock and experimental are the order. It will be held at Town Hall in Times Square and full details on the line-up will be available soon.
May 16 – Hardcore Activity In Progress: This event will present a sampling of the most extreme recording artists in metal, techno, jazz, classical, noise, hip hop, and beyond at at the Knockdown Center in Queens and will feature performances by Tim Hecker, Napalm Death, Gunplay, The Thing, Wolf Eyes, Regis, Bastard Noise, LubomyrMelnyk, Skullflower, Joe McPhee/Chris Corsano, Okkyung Lee, Clipping, Yoshiko Ohara, Reg Bloor and Gnaw.
May 17 – Running Back: Gerd Janson All Night Long: Longtime Red Bull Music Academy collaborator, team member and “DJ’s DJ” GerdJanson will perform all night long on the intimate TBA Brooklyn stage in Williamsburg.
May 18 – Panda Bear: Panda Bear will headline at Warsaw, where the Animal Collective member will debut some of the new music from his upcoming solo album.
May 21 – A Conversation With D’Angelo: This public lecture will be held at the Brooklyn Museum Cantor Auditorium.
May 24 – The Mister Saturday Night House Party: The popular Brooklyn-based party and record label Mister Saturday Night will host a special ‘house party’ edition featuring the label’s full roster of talent all at one event for the first time ever.
May 28 – Hudson Mohawke & Friends Live: Hudson Mohawke will take the Webster Hall stage for his first-ever live performance.
May 30 – Lit City Trax: One of New York’s young club and label crews will combine with the Academy to host a special standout club event at The Westway.
May 31 – A Class of Its Own: This special event held at Abrons Arts Center features fifteen artists on three stages including Nightwave, Anenon, Robot Koch, Yosi Horikawa, DJ NiRE, and others.
