In a post on Disney‘s Twitter account yesterday evening, the entertainment giant revealed the full cast for their upcoming live-action remake of 1994 animated musical classic The Lion King–and we couldn’t be more excited about it. Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) will play the lead role of Simba, with Beyoncé starring alongside him as Nala. The legendary James Earl Jones will reprise his role as Mufasa from the original film, while Academy Award nominee Whiwetel Ejiofor will play the nefarious Scar and the decorated Alfre Woodard will play Simba’s mother, Sarabi…

…And that’s just the leads. The rest of the supporting cast is equally star-studded, with comedian and late night host John Oliver playing pessimistic toucan Zazu, South African actor/playwright John Kani voicing the wise Rafiki, and a sure-to-be-hilarous pairing of comedic favorites Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner as Timon and Pumba. Scar’s cackling hyena cronies will be played by multi-talented comedians Eric André and Keegan-Michael Key as well as Ugandan-German actress Florence Kasumba, best known for playing Ayo in the Marvel cinematic canon. Child actors JD McCrary and Shahadi Wright Joseph will play young Simba and young Nala.

While we all grow up in different places with different backgrounds, different living situations, different beliefs, and so on, there is one thing that almost everyone’s childhood had in common: Disney movies. We all watched them, sand along to them, probably had a lunchbox with one of their characters on it at some point in time. Those movies are classics, so when Disney began an extensive campaign of live-action remakes, many people were skeptical. However, so far the films have been great: The technologically groundbreaking 2016 The Jungle Book remake directed by Jon Favreau was a worldwide smash, earning close to $1B worldwide, and this year’s live-action Beauty and the Beast became the highest-grossing live-action musical of all time within ten days of its theatrical release.

With the strength of its cast, the proven track record of its director, its beloved story and characters and, of course, the unforgettable soundtrack written by Elton JohnTim Rice, Hans Zimmer, and more, the new live-action remake of The Lion King is shaping up to be a sure-fire classic in its own right.

The new Lion King is set to open July 19, 2019. Until then, listen back to the original movie soundtrack and imagine these new voices in the mix. Sounds pretty fantastic to us…
