While the Grateful Dead were a tour-de-force band on the road by the end of 1976, Jerry Garcia found an important creative outlet in the Jerry Garcia Band. The JGB ramped up their touring in 1975 when the Dead were on hiatus, as Garcia relished his time with the lower pressure performances that the solo band project could offer. By 1976, the band was a mixture of outside musicians and Dead members, as Keith Godchaux and Donna Jean Godchaux were both in the lineup, alongside John Kahn and Ron Tutt.
The band had played a show on 11/8/76 at Sophie’s in Palo Alto, CA, though the recording was thought to be lost for many years. It was actually Donna Jean who discovered the recording, as she was moving boxes from her garage in 2015. The show, which was just released as GarciaLive Volume 7: includes covers of songs by Smokey Robinson, Bob Dylan, JJ Cale, Bob Marley and more!
