Live Dead & Brothers brought their Truckin’ 2025 Spring Tour to Portland’s Alberta Rose Theatre for a two-night celebration of the Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers Band.

Joined by special guest Steve Kimock, the group—comprised of Berry Duane Oakley (son of Allman Brothers founding bassist Berry Oakley) on bass, Mark Karan (RatDog) on guitar, Scott Guberman (Phil Lesh & Friends) on keys, and Pete Lavezzoli (Oteil & Friends) on drums—bridged the psychedelic San Francisco sound and Southern blues-rock traditions with a mix of faithful covers and extended jams.

On night one, the band opened with a free-flowing jam into “Minglewood Blues” before moving through Allmans staples like “Don’t Want You No More”, “Not My Cross To Bear”, and “Hot ’lanta”. A surprise bust-out of “Me & My Uncle” added Deadhead flair, while the set closed with a melodic “Melissa” > “Franklin’s Tower” > “Blue Sky” suite.

Set two took off with a “Smokestack Lightning” jam sandwiching “The Other One”, followed by “One Way Out” and a stunning sequence of “Big River” > “Dark Star” > “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed”. The band welcomed special guest Gabe Woodside, a.k.a. “The Big Gabe”, to sing lead vocals on “Easy Wind”, before capping the night with a fiery “Jessica”.

Night two opened with a breezy take on The Beatles‘ “Here Comes the Sun” before moving through staples like “Midnight Rider”, “Uncle John’s Band”, and “Statesboro Blues”. After welcoming The Big Gabe back for “Good Lovin'”, the band surprised the crowd with a cover of Bob Marley’s politically charge reggae classic “Get Up, Stand Up”, adding a socially conscious groove to the otherwise blues-rock heavy lineup before jamming back into “Good Lovin'”. The first set closed with a lively “Blue Sky” that nodded back to the Dead with a surprise return to “Uncle John’s Band”.

The second set leaned heavier into classic Dead and Allman Brothers fare, highlighted by “Truckin’”, “Dreams”, and a fiery “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” that showcased the band’s instrumental prowess. A soul-stirring “Morning Dew” brought the crowd to a hush before a thunderous “Whipping Post” encore left the room buzzing.

For fans of either band—or both—Live Dead & Brothers offers a rare opportunity to hear these iconic catalogs brought to life by musicians deeply connected to the source, with passion, precision, and plenty of nuanced improvisation.
