Break Science Live Band / The Russ Liquid Test / The Werks – The Howlin’ Wolf

Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff, Eric “Jesus” Coomes, and The Shady Horns’ Eric “Benny” Bloom and Ryan Zoidis round out the live band lineup, giving this show an all-star cast that will deliver the ultimate New Orleans dance party.

Karl Denson is a Jazz Fest icon. His late-night shows in New Orleans always bring the heat, and you never know who might join him when he and his Tiny Universe take the stage during one of their infamous late night performances. This year, Denson will bring his brand of power-funk to One Eyed Jacks on Saturday, April 29th for a memorable weekend 1 show, and he’s just announced the addition of local saxophone legend Donald Harrison as a special guest for the performance.
Harrison, who’s known as the “King of Nouveau Swing,” is more known in jazz circles for combining traditional New Orleans music with R&B, Hip-Hop, Soul, and Rock. Fu*k 2016: A Tribute To Musicians We Lost – The Howlin’ Wolf
2016 was one of the most upsetting years on record, as we lost so many amazing artists over the course of twelve months. Of course, New Orleans is the perfect place to pay tribute to these artists, and Jazz Fest is the perfect time. Dubbed Funk 2016: A Tribute To Musicians We Lost, the tribute will explore the musical gifts all of the amazing artists we lost last year, such as Prince, David Bowie, George Michael, Maurice White, Phife Dawg, and more. While we’re glad the year is over, it’s time to look back and celebrate these wonderful artists.
To pay tribute to these amazing musical icons, we’re bringing together Michaelangelo Carubba, Shira Elias, and Craig Brodhead from Turkuaz, Joey Porter, Garrett Sayers, and Lyle Divinsky of The Motet, and Khris Royal and Maurice “Mobetta” Brown for an all-star tribute known as Fu*k 2016! Also slated to appear at this show is D.J. Williams of Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Danny Mayer of the Eric Krasno Band, Steveland Swatkins of Allen Stone‘s band, and Turkuaz’s pink-haired vocalist Sammi Garett. The Turkuaz Horns will also be on hand to complete one of the most badass horn sections we can imagine.
The Revivalists side project RumpleSTEELskin will open the night, while Brooklyn’s own The London Souls will perform a special super-late-night performance in The Den immediately following the Fu*k 2016 tribute set. Make no mistake, this is sure to be one of the biggest throwdowns during Jazz Fest!

On Tuesday, May 2nd, The Nth Power will bring together a slew of special guests to re-create their epic tribute to Earth, Wind & Fire tribute known as “Earth, Wind & Power”. This show was a smash hit at Jazz Fest last year, and received rave reviews at this year’s Brooklyn Comes Alive festival. It’s a euphoric tribute that dives deep into the catalog of Earth, Wind & Fire, as the band delivers deep cuts alongside some of the band’s mega-hits. The Nth Power has organized a ton of special guests for this show, with Rashawn Ross of Dave Matthews Band, Skerik, Weedie Braimah, Farnell Newton, and Drew Sayers and Lyle Davinsky of The Motet all joining in on the fun.
Earth, Wind & Power will be joined by Oteil and Kofi Burbridge and Neal and Alan Evans, also known as the All Brothers Band. This is another band that made waves at Brooklyn Comes Alive, as well as up-and-coming funk act Organ Freeman. The Brothers collaborated for an EP earlier this year, though they’ve yet to present this project for public ears, but you can expect smooth layers of funk and jazz throughout the improv-heavy set. Oteil and Kofi will be playing double duty on this night, as both of them will also make appearances during Earth, Wind & Power’s headlining set.
The ambitious and aggressive funk of Organ Freeman will add to this powerhouse bill as the opening act. Organ Freeman is fueled by the trio of guitarist Erik Carlson, drummer Rob Humphreys and organist Trevor Steer, and should immediately be put on your radar if it isn’t already.
Additionally, a number of awesome musicians will gather in The Den to pay tribute to Allen Toussaint. The band, known as the “Allen Toussaint Jukebox,” will feature a full set of music from the prodigious songwriter’s illustrious career. The band will consist of Shira Elias and Michelangelo Carubba from Turkuaz, Sasha Brown from Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds, Joe Tatton from The New Mastersounds, and Eric Vogel from the Nigel Hall Band.

Megawatt: Afro-Dub Soundclash – One Eyed Jacks
A few years ago, Luke Quaranta of Toubab Krewe decided that it was time to put the spotlight on West African music, and from that seed, JuJu Fest was born. JuJu Fest is a world music mini-festival-within-a-festiva
This year, one show in particular tops the bill with a killer lineup and an awesome theme. Raja Kassis, guitar player of modern Afrobeat legends Antibalas (and co-founder of JuJu Fest) reached out to Borahm Lee (Break Science, Pretty Lights) and Josh Werner (Original Matisyahu band, Lee Scratch Perry, Wu-Tang Clan), two long time friends who all share a storied history playing Dub and Reggae music together, to create Megawatt: Afro-Dub Soundclash. This will certainly be an incredible night of dub, reggae and afro vibes that will hit The Maison on Wednesday, May 3rd. Joining them will be modern jazz/funk legend Adam Deitch (Lettuce, Break Science), master percussionist Weedie Braimah, local sax hero Khris Royal, and trumpet master Maurice “Mobetta” Brown. As if it couldn’t get any better, Megawatt will be fronted on vocals by none other than Bajah, a superstar in Sierra Leone affectionately know back home as the “Lyrical Bomber.” Bajah has been a frequent guest in years past of such acts as Break Science, Talib Kweli and The Roots, to name a few.
