A new docuseries will tell the story of how Perry Ferrell‘s farewell tour for Jane’s Addiction became one of North America’s biggest and most enduring festivals. Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza, a three-part documentary series, is currently in development for Paramount+.

Produced with the cooperation of Ferrell as well as C3 Presents, part owner of the festival, the series from director Michael John Warren will revisit Lollapalooza’s humble 1991 beginnings. Originally a traveling cavalcade of alt-rock luminaries like Jane’s Addiction, Nine Inch NailsRollins Band, and Violent Femmes, the festival eventually found a permanent home in Chicago. Over its three decades, Lollapalooza has hosted everyone from Daft Punk to Radiohead to Lady Gaga to Lou Reed and thousands more. International offshoots have since popped up in Chile, Berlin, Argentina, Brazil, Paris, and more.

“When Lolla was launched in 1991, the concert industry felt like a boring car ride that was running out of gas,” Ferrell said in a statement. “We pumped new life into the live music experience and set the foundation for the youth’s counter culture to become important and exciting again. Now more than three decades young, I am happy to have this opportunity to give people an inside look at the festival’s contribution to music history.”

Warren’s previous directing credits include music documentaries/concert films such as Jay-Z‘s Fade To Black and Nicki Minaj: My Time Again. Per IMDb, Warren is also currently working on a documentary on John Prine, cataloging the singer-songwriter’s life alongside footage from last year’s tribute concerts in Nashville.

“As a naive teenager trapped in the doldrums of Suburbia, U.S.A, I attended the first-ever Lollapalooza, and it totally blew my mind,” Warren said. “It was dangerous, beautiful and instantly widened my perspective. So, it’s an honor to be entrusted to tell the true story of one of the most astonishing cultural touchstones in the last half-century.”

MTV Entertainment Studios will produce the Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza documentary series with FunMeter (McMillion$).
