Founding Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer Bob Burns was killed in a single-car accident yesterday, April 3rd, in Cartersville, GA, according to the Cartersville Patch. Burns was with the band through 1974, when he left after being “overwhelmed by life on the road.”
Burns appeared on the band’s first two albums, (Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd) (1973) and Second Helping (1974), which includes such famous tracks as “Gimme Three Steps,” “Sweet Home Alabama,” and “Free Bird.” While Burns had left the band before the 1977 plane crash that killed Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and Cassie Gaines, he did reunite with the surviving members when Skynyrd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.
The local paper reports that Burns’ car struck a mailbox and tree, and that he was the only occupant of the vehicle. L4LM sends our condolences to Burns and his loved ones.
