Artists and musicians oftentimes have platforms that allow them to speak to a wide array of people. During election seasons many make political statements, offer insight into their political leanings, or even hit the campaign trail with their favorite candidate. The Main Squeeze, however, chose to let the music speak for them, and did so with a soulful cover of Stevie Wonder‘s “Love’s In Need Of Love Today”, which the band premiered on Tuesday.

While taking on the challenge of performing a song as complex as “Love’s In Need Of Love Today” is not an easy task, The Main Squeeze are no strangers to high-profile covers. The band recently played Dark Side of the Moon in full during a livestream earlier this month, following cover videos of Derek and the Dominos‘ “Layla“, Rage Against The Machine‘s “Bulls On Parade“, and The Beatles‘ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” from earlier this year.

The Main Squeeze didn’t just cover Stevie Wonder, either, but they executed his 1976 hit flawlessly. Led by vocalist Corey Frye, the rest of the quintet joined him on the memorable opening harmonies before giving way to the first verse. As much as Frye’s vocals were a highlight and focal point of the cover, the rest of the band held their own and matched his energy throughout the song’s 7:07 runtime.

A steady rhythm section from Rob Walker (bass) and Reuben Gingrich (drums) laid a proper foundation for the wave-like keys from BenSmiley” Silverstein and reverberating guitar accents from Max Newman. Their backing vocals shone through the brightest toward the end of the song with the same type of call-and-response section heard on the original. As they moved towards the end, Frye ended with the traditional blues technique of repeating phrases, singing “Let’s give the world love” multiple times to close out the video.
