Two weeks ago today, the world was shaken by the news of a terrorist attack at Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK following pop star Ariana Grande‘s performance. The attack left a gruesome scene, injuring more than 20 dead an roughly 50 more injured at a concert predominantly attended by young girls and their parents. The days since have continued to be chaotic and harrowing, as the world UK saw both stunning displays of empathy and humanity and further terror attacks in London this weekend, and concerts worldwide experienced frightening security scares.

In a open letter to her social media followers in the wake of the attack, Grande had trumpeted the importance of not letting incidents like this deter you from seeking out live music, and emphasized the importance of live music as a way to come together and unite people amid differences: “Music is meant to heal us, to bring us together, to make us happy. So that is what it will continue to do for us.”

On Saturday, Grande returned to Manchester and a veritable who’s-who of A-list musicians for “One Love Manchester,” her star-studded charity concert to benefit the victims of the attack at her show on less than two weeks earlier. Miley Cyrus, Coldplay, Liam Gallagher, Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, Black Eyed Peas, Mac Miller, and many more.

The three-plus-hour show was held across town from Manchester Arena at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground, which included a section specifically set aside for attendees of Grande’s initial Manchester show. The show sold out in under six minutes, was webcast via BBC and on Ariana Grande’s YouTube page and, according to the Red Cross U.K., the benefit raised over 7 million pounds ($9 million), and with more to come after TV and merchandising deals are accounted for.

This touching and wildly successful benefit event was a touching show of unity and togetherness, with a message that screamed “we will not be defeated.” However, just hours later, another coordinated terrorist attack was perpetrated in the UK, this time at the iconic London Bridge in the nation’s capitol–not a concert, but a similarly high-traffic, tourist-heavy area in a major city. While this latest attack doesn’t diminish the statement made at “One Love Manchester”–that we, as a global community, will not go quietly–the fact remains that this violence can (and likely will) continue, so the good guys can’t stop either. One big show of unity and charity isn’t enough. We all have to continue to do everything we can to help shape a peaceful vision for the future–especially in a time of such turmoil and uncertainty like today.
