Marcus King and Chris “Daddy” Dave kicked off their highly anticipated residency at New York’s Blue Note Jazz Club last night with help from MonoNeon.
The collaboration may seem unexpected, combining King’s blues-based guitar playing and soulful singing with Dave’s jazz-tinged hip-hop drumming, but the duo laid down the foundation of the partnership on King’s recent album, Mood Swings. Acclaimed producer Rick Rubin tapped Dave to accentuate the R&B-leaning collection with his unique off-kilter yet deeply in-the-pocket drum grooves. Add in MonoNeon, and the result is a trio of virtuosic talent, with three of the top voices from disparate genres coming together in perfect harmony to create a surprisingly cohesive sound far greater than the sum of its parts.

The trio played tunes from Mood Swings including “F*ck My Life Up Again” and “Inglewood Motel (Halestorm)” as well as funk and soul classics like “Work To Do” by The Isley Brothers and “Back Door Santa” by Clarence Carter.
“This is one of my favorite Christmas songs,” King told the audience as he introduced “Back Door Santa”. “I know Christmas is over, but I did some Christmas stuff at the Grand Ole Opry and they wouldn’t let me do this one.”

The residency continues with two more nights featuring the same trio, with early and late shows on Wednesday, January 15th and Thursday, January 16th. King and Dave will then play three more nights with acclaimed guitar virtuoso Isaiah Sharkey on the 17th–19th. Tickets are available here.
