Michael Jackson‘s 1982 album Thriller has sold 30 million copies in the US, making it the first record to ever do so. The 30x multi-platinum record includes iconic hits like “Beat It” and “Billie Jean,” also holding records for the best-selling album of all time, most Grammy wins (eight in one night), and the only album ever to remain No. 1 on Billboard’s charts for 37 consecutive weeks. 

The record sales increased dramatically after the pop star’s death in 2009, with about 166,000 copies sold every year since. This makes Michael Jackson the top-earning dead celebrity, bringing in a reported $1 billion since his passing.

Under any circumstances, these numbers are incredible; but especially considering the current status of the record industry, it is obvious that MJ’s influence on music and culture was enormous. Enjoy this spooky flashback of the momentous music video:
