Photographer Michael Weintrob will take his beloved InstrumentHead photo series on the road this month for a traveling art truck experience. The photo exhibit featuring prominent musicians like Billy Strings, Derek Trucks, and Bootsy Collins with their faces obscured by their instruments will travel to fan-favorite Colorado venues throughout August.
After kicking off the InstrumentHead art truck tour with stops at Telluride Jazz Festival, Aspen Art Collective, and Utah’s Park City Song Summit, Weintrob will take the exhibit to Fort Collins, CO’s Aggie Theatre on Tuesday, August 19th. On the afternoon of Sunday, August 24th, Weintrob will stop at Denver hotspot Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom for the third-annual Mile High Poster Show before setting up camp for three nights at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in nearby Morrison.
The nationally recognized photographer will host his exhibition August 27th–29th during Red Rocks shows by Teddy Swims, Sierra Ferrell, and Little Big Town, respectively. Finally, the Colorado tour will wrap on Sunday, August 31st, at the Boulder Theater, where Dark Star Orchestra will perform that evening. Following the Centennial State dates, Weintrob will make one more stop at The Factory in St. Louis, MO on Tuesday, September 2nd.
“I started my career in Colorado—my first InstrumentHead portrait was done at the Aggie Theatre with Derek Trucks Band in 2000 —and I’ve got deep roots here, so I wanted to bring my work back and make it accessible,” Weintrob told Live For Live Music of his decision to take his exhibit on tour. “By having the mobile truck I can go to more places. It’s a full circle moment.”
This tour will see Weintrob load his acclaimed exhibit into a modified box truck and deliver photos, songs, and stories from the road to venues throughout the Rocky Mountains. His innovative series puts a unique twist on musician photo shoots, blocking the artist’s face and instead using their instrument and other identifying equipment to hint at their identity. In addition to selling individual prints, Weintrob has compiled his series into two books, InstrumentHead and InstrumentHead Revealed, available on his website.
