moe. returned to the road this weekend to kick off the fall leg of its triumphant 35th anniversary tour, bringing the celebration to State House Square in Hartford, CT, Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown, NJ, and Uptown Theater in Providence, RI.

Armed with new material from the band’s recent 14th studio album, Circle of Giants—a deeply retrospective work reflecting the band’s many “Ups and Downs” and also the first album to feature keyboardist/flautist Nate Wilson—moe. launched the run on Thursday with a free show in Hartford. The band opened with “Happy Hour Hero”, a moe. classic off 1998’s Tin Cans & Car Tires, and fit one song from Circle of Giants into each set, with “Bat Country” and “Band in the Sky” both making appearances. They also covered not one but two Led Zeppelin songs, playing “No Quarter” in set two and finishing the encore with “Immigrant Song”.

Friday’s visit to the Garden State likewise witnessed a pair of tracks off Circle of Giants. The Nate Wilson-composed “Giants” arrived early in set one, followed by “Tomorrow Is Another Day”, which began a seamlessly segued sequence, flowing right into “Spine of a Dog”. From there, the band continued on to “Rebubula” without stopping and took a detour through Genesis‘ “Carpet Crawlers” before finishing the fan favorite. A cover of Deep Purple‘s “Space Truckin'” kicked off another segue-heavy set that culminated with “Recreational Chemistry”, and “Nebraska” capped the night in the encore slot.

On Saturday, moe. doubled its quota of Circle of Giants selections in Providence, opening with another Nate Wilson original, “Yellow Tigers”. “Don’tcha Know” and “Living Again” brought the night’s tally to three, and an “Ups and Downs” encore made four, leaving just two tracks from the album unplayed ahead of tonight’s weekend run closer at Bowl in the Pines in Sidney, ME.
