Ariana Grande is a pretty bankable name within the pop music realm these days. So popular in fact that the fellas in horn-and-percussion trio Moon Hooch decided to see what all the commotion is about by putting their unique spin on one of the singer’s recent hit singles, “God Is A Woman”.

The song initially appeared as one of the tracks on Grande’s 2018 studio album, Sweetener. The song managed to crack the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart upon its release, and is expected to climb even higher now that Moon Hooch has put their own spin on the catchy tune. Wenzl McGowen handles the song’s lyrical melody with his saxophone, while Mike Wilbur–who is also on sax for this recording–provides a low-end layer over which McGowen can lay down his lead lines. The two horn parts contrast perfectly to help the song take flight without the need of any vocal parts.

“Imagine how people would have reacted to a pop song with this title in the Middle Ages,” McGowen added in a statement about the progressive message of the hit song. “Ariana probably would have been persecuted! In the last century, the power of the feminine has come a long way of freeing itself from cultural oppression. A Top 40 song called ‘God is a Woman’ is a sign that the work feminists have done in the past has shifted the collective consciousness.”

Fans can decide for themselves which version they like better by watching the video of Moon Hooch’s new cover seen (and heard) below.

It’s unclear at the moment whether or not the band will begin incorporating their smooth cover into their nightly setlists as part of their 2019 winter/spring tour, which started last night in Columbus, OH and continues until April 27th with their appearance at Pennsylvania’s Some Kind Of Jam. Fans can head over to the band’s website for ticket info to all their upcoming performances.
