At 65 years of age, English singer Morrissey brilliantly performed to a sold-out crowd of die-hard fans Friday at the historic Murat Theatre, the oldest existing stage house in downtown Indianapolis.
Affectionately referred to by his followers as “Moz,” the former frontman for The Smiths remains the same eccentric and entertaining icon that he has always been. True to his nature, Morrissey was heavily engaged with his fans, shaking hands with many of them throughout the show and offering up his tie as a beloved keepsake for a tug-of-war among the eager attendees in the center of the pit. Known for his morbidly deep, thought-provoking and sometimes controversial lyrics, Morrissey at one point implored the audience to consider if true love really even exists.
With a resplendent stage presence and smooth, fervent voice, Morrissey did not disappoint, singing many of his recent hits such as “I Wish You Lonely”, “Rebels Without Applause”, and “Every Day is Like Sunday” with an extended keyboard intro, as well as transporting his fans back to the ’80s with several memorable Smiths tunes including “How Soon is Now” and “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want”. After an 18-song set lasting just under two hours, he closed out the evening with a “Speedway” encore, tossed his shirt into the crowd, and promptly exited the stage, leaving his screaming fans wanting more. Such a nostalgic evening and overall incredible performance.
