Few albums in the 21st-century rock canon have aged as gracefully as Z, My Morning Jacket’s transformative 2005 release. Two decades later, the Louisville-bred band is honoring its 20th anniversary with a remastered Deluxe Edition, featuring new songs, unearthed demos, resurfaced sounds from the vault, and fresh visual storytelling that reopens the portal to one of their most defining eras.

In a heartfelt post this week, the band reflected on the meaning of returning to Z after twenty years:

Time does strange things. It stretches and contracts. When we listened back to Z recently, we were warmed by all the memories brought up from 20 years ago when we first created it together. We felt an urgency to share those things, to let Z breathe again in another dimension. It takes a slightly different form every time we perform a song from it… so why not let it expand again, with new wings?

To celebrate 20 years of Z, My Morning Jacket has released Z (20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)—a lovingly remastered 3LP set on pink, coral, and blue vinyl, complete with 14 previously unreleased demos and outtakes that pull listeners deeper into the band’s creative world. The album was remastered by Grammy-winning engineer Emily Lazar (Beck, Jacob Collier) and produced by John Leckie, the legendary studio mind behind Radiohead and The Stone Roses.

Accompanying the release is a new music video for “Wordless Chorus”, directed by longtime collaborator Sam Erickson. The video offers a beautiful reflection on one of the band’s most transcendent tracks, revisiting both studio sessions and live performances during that era.

My Morning Jacket – “Wordless Chorus” (Official Video)

Frontman Jim James’ lyrics on songs like “Gideon” (“Truly what have we become… hated and feared for something we don’t want”) and “Wordless Chorus” (“We are the innovators”) still echo powerfully today. Many of these songs feel eerily relevant, an echo from 2005 that continues to resonate with the same urgency and soul.

To mark the milestone, My Morning Jacket will perform Z in its entirety at a limited run of 20th Anniversary shows woven into the band’s ongoing MY MORNING JACKET “is” ON TOUR series. These special sets will take place at Brooklyn Paramount (October 16th), Chicago’s Salt Shed (October 26th), and Atlanta’s Fox Theatre (November 1st).

Earlier Z anniversary performances also hit Red Rocks Amphitheatre (August 15th) and the Hollywood Palladium (August 19th). Fans can expect the album front to back, plus, as James teased, “some other songs, don’t worry.”

Originally released in 2005, Z was My Morning Jacket’s great leap forward, a beautiful blend of genre and emotion that redefined the band’s sound and solidified its place in modern rock. Two decades later, Z hasn’t just been remastered; it’s been reborn.

Z (20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) is available digitally, on CD, and as a limited 3LP colored vinyl set here. Stream the album below or on your preferred platform.

The anniversary arrives amid one of the band’s busiest and most celebrated years. My Morning Jacket is currently touring in support of its 10th studio album, is, produced by Brendan O’Brien (Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen). Tracks like “Time Waited” and “Squid Ink” carry forward the spirit of experimentation that first defined Z, reaffirming the group’s boundless creative energy.

My Morning Jacket also made a triumphant return to Austin City Limits in August, marking the group’s first appearance on the show in nearly a decade. MMJ’s relationship with ACL runs deep, having first performed there in 2005, the same year Z was released. Twenty years later, the band returned both to perform and to be inducted into the ACL Hall of Fame in a special ceremony presented by filmmaker Cameron Crowe. The episode is set to premiere on October 7th on YouTube and the PBS app before airing on television on October 18th.
