What better way to kick off Kentucky Derby week than a five-night residency at the historic Louisville Palace Theatre by Louisville-native band My Morning Jacket? The Come Home Again run hit Louisville just a day after the city donned a hometown heroes banner prominently on the side of the Kentucky Exposition Center building featuring all five band members including Jim James (lead vocals/guitar), Tom Blankenship (bass), Carl Broemel (guitar), Patrick Hallahan (drums), and Bo Koster (keyboards).

Friday’s show on April 25th set the tone of the weekend with several high-energy favorites including “Off The Record” and “Magheetah”. Keeping the fans guessing, the band also offered a blend of tour debuts such as “Librarian”, covers such as Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away” and Traffic’s “Feelin’ Alright”, and several other rarities. Closing out the evening with “One Big Holiday”, My Morning Jacket left fans satisfied but hungry to return for another night.

The second show on April 26th opened with “Beginning From the Ending” from MMJ’s newly released album is. From there, the band plowed full speed ahead with more tour debuts such as “Knot Comes Loose”, ”Highly Suspicious”, and the timely Grateful Dead cover “One More Saturday Night”, as well as sought-after favorites “Dondante” and “Circuital”. Despite a temporary loss of power with the sound system, the band didn’t miss a beat. James performed a raw, unplugged performance of “Bermuda Highway” which seemingly excited the crowd even more as they took over the chorus in a singalong and filled any brief moments of silence with shouts of affirmation. Closing out the evening was a four-song encore including Pet Shop Boys’ “West End Girls”, which was nothing less than a full-on dance party under the electrifying lights of the disco ball.

Sunday’s show celebrated the shared birthdays of James and Hallahan and once again delivered many crowd-pleasers including “It Beats for U”, “Half a Lifetime”, “Cobra”, and the Rolling Stones‘ “Miss You”. Earlier in the set, Carl Broemel performed “Carried Away” from his All Birds Say album. The encore began with a heartfelt three-song medley performed solo by James and consisting of “I Needed It Most”, Simon & Garfunkel cover “Homeward Bound”, where James changed the lyrics to reflectively state, “I’m glad I am, homeward bound,” and Bob Dylan‘s “Mr. Tambourine Man”. The weekend concluded with an epic rendition of the Rolling Stones‘ “Happy”, which is exactly how the audience left the venue.

My Morning Jacket promised five unique shows, and after taking Monday off, the band returned to the stage and made good on its word with two more no-repeat performances on Tuesday, April 29th and Wednesday, April 30th before continuing the tour with a stop in Chesterfield, MO and a set at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
