Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats have announced details of their third studio LP, The Future, out on November 5th via Stax Records. Along with Wednesday’s album announcement the band has shared the lead single, “Survivor”.
Coming three years after their last full-length LP and six years after their self-titled debut, The Future displays a matured group that has seen the lights of fame. The band’s debut album was certified Gold in the U.S. and the 2018 follow-up, Tearing At The Seams, hosted three singles that hit #1 at Triple A Radio.
In the midst of all that fame, however, Rateliff went out on his own to release his acclaimed 2020 solo folk album, And It’s Still Alright. The band then reunited in full at Studio 8H at Rockefeller Center for their debut on Saturday Night Live back in February and are now back together in full force.

The album’s lead offering, “Survivor”, is a neo-soul/R&B romp that proudly declares the group’s comeback. The song’s message is decidedly modern in light of the pandemic, as Rateliff growls out the refrain of “You think that I’m/Some great survivor,” as all of our survival skills have been tested this past year-and-a-half.
“I look at the album overall as a big question,” Rateliff said in a press release. “When I was writing the record we were in the middle of a pandemic and our future looked pretty bleak. I just continue to try to write from a place of hope. Then my own neurosis, and maybe being a libra gets in the way, and I can’t make up my mind. There is this constant back and forth battle in me personally and I am sure that comes out in my writing.”
The Future was recorded at Rateliff’s new Broken Creek Studio outside Denver and was produced by Bradley Cook (Bon Iver, Kevin Morby, The War on Drugs) and R.M.B.—the production trio of Rateliff, Patrick Meese (The Night Sweats), and James Barone (Beach House)—who were behind And It’s Still Alright. In addition to Rateliff on guitar and vocals, The Night Sweats are Joseph Pope III (bass), Meese (drums, percussion, keys), Luke Mossman (guitar), Mark Shusterman (organ, keys), Andreas Wild (saxophone), Daniel Hardaway (trumpet) and Jeff Dazey (saxophone).
