Neil Young continues to crank out the content with news of a new live album, Coastal, and accompanying concert film. Out April 18th, Coastal chronicles Young’s 2023 solo tour of the same name which signaled his first tour following the COVID pandemic. A behind-the-scenes documentary on the tour directed by Young’s wife Daryl Hannah will hit theaters for one night only on April 17th.
Along with the announcement, Young shared a live recording of “Vampire Blues”. Taken from 1974’s underrated classic On The Beach, “Vampire Blues” is emblematic of Young’s song choices for the 2023 solo tour. The tracklist mines the annals of a celebrated discography, with deeper cuts like the opening “I’m The Ocean” and “Throw Your Hatred Down” (1995’s Mirror Ball), as well as “Prime of Life” (1994’s Sleeps with Angels), “When I Hold You In My Arms” (2002’s Are You Passionate?), and “Expecting To Fly” borrowed from the Buffalo Springfield catalog. The live album also includes classics “Comes A Time”, “I Am A Child”, and emerging favorite “Love Earth”.
“Coastal offers a glimpse behind the curtain of this unguarded iconoclast, as he navigates a return to the stage post-Covid—from his everyday observations on the bus to his candid, wry banter with his audience,” a description of the video reads. “The illuminating film also features songs rarely, if ever played live, performed in breathtakingly beautiful theaters.”
