Wilco‘s Nels Cline has released Share The Wealth, a new studio album from his project The Nels Cline Singers. The album arrived this week via Blue Note Records just six weeks after sharing the lead single, “Beam/Spiral“.
This album marks the third that Nels Cline has released with Blue Note Records and features an expanded version of his band, The Nels Cline Singers. In addition to Cline’s work on guitar, the roster includes Skerik (saxophone), Brian Marsella (keys), Trevor Dunn (bass), and Cyro Baptista (percussion).
Co-produced by Cline and Eli Crews and recorded in just two days at The Bunker in Brooklyn, NY, Share The Wealth solidifies itself as Cline’s most experimental and cutting-edge Blue Note album yet. Comprised of five world-class musicians that have never even played a gig together, this new version of The Nels Cline Singers captured the magic of premium improvisation and packaged it into 10 tracks of exploratory jams.
“So basically, the whole thing was an experiment,” said Cline in a press release. “We recorded all these jams with the idea that I was going to take tiny fragments of them and create this kind of cut-and-paste, collaged, psychedelic record like an Os Mutantes record or something crazy like that. But when I listened back to these jams, I liked them so much that I wanted to keep them intact. And some of the most startling transitions, they’re not edits. They just happened in the course of these long improvisations in the studio, almost like magic.”
