Newly restored, fan-shot footage of the first-ever Led Zeppelin concert in Japan offers a rare glimpse of the iconic band in action during its 1971 world tour.
The historic performance took place on September 23rd, 1971 at Tokyo’s legendary Budokan arena and was captured by two Japanese fans—Hideo Yamada and T. Ohtaki—using an 8mm camera and Super 8 film, respectively. Their amateur recordings document Led Zeppelin’s first live introduction to Japanese audiences, providing insight into a formative moment in the band’s legacy.
“At that time, there were almost no videos of Led Zeppelin, so we were happy just to see Led Zeppelin in action,” Yamada told LedZepNews. “[We] were blown away by how cool Jimmy’s actions were.”

Yamada originally published part of the film online in 2018 and recently sent his original reels to the United States for restoration. The film was rescanned in 4K and color-corrected by Quazza of Reel Revival Film, resulting in one of the highest-quality fan-shot Zeppelin videos from the era. The footage was then synced with Yamada’s audio recording of the concert by ledzepfilm wherever possible.
The set opened with a thunderous “Immigrant Song” and featured many staples of the Led Zeppelin catalog, including “Heartbreaker”, “Black Dog”, “Dazed and Confused”, “Stairway to Heaven”, “Moby Dick”, “Whole Lotta Love”, and “Good Times Bad Times”. The band returned for an encore with a fiery rendition of “Communication Breakdown”. Scroll down to view the full setlist.
