Nine Inch Nails released their EP Not the Actual Events back in December, and noted that it would be the first of a trilogy of EPs that would be completed during 2017. A week ago, the second EP in the series was officially announced, Add Violence, due out this Friday, July 21. With the announcement came the first of five tracks, called “Less Than.” Today, Nine Inch Nails have released a second track from Add Violence, called “This Isn’t The Place.”
As described by a press release, “The sonic palette expands significantly from Not the Actual Events, incorporating elements of beauty into the dark dissonance. The narrative arc linking the three records begins to emerge through the disassociated lyrics and the provocative and clue-filed cover artwork and accompanying physical component.”
The new track, “This Isn’t The Place,” is certainly on the darker side, as the video portrays a machine with human-oriented buttons that boost “Anxiety,” “Deviation, “Disorder,” and “Morale.” With subtle references to past Nine Inch Nails projects, reddit users have made associations to the band’s earlier concept album Year Zero–specifically the medication featured in the video, Cedocore, which might be a callback to the 2007 record. Consequence of Sound points out that Add Violence could be a sequel to Year Zero.
