Oteil Burbridge celebrated another year around the sun while surrounded by music and the entire LOCKN‘ community with his Oteil & Friends performance at the Virginia music festival late in the afternoon on Saturday. For the guest-filled set on day three of the weekend music festival, Burbridge treated attendees to a set which also included contributions from Bob Weir, Duane Betts, Melvin Seals, Eric Krasno, Jay Lane, Neal Casal, and TAB’s horn section of Jen Hartswick, Natalie Cressman, and James Casey, along with Alfreda Gerald and Lamar Williams Jr.
The Oteil & Friends set featured a mix of fantastic covers beginning with Jerry Garcia‘s “Run for the Roses”, and continued with the band’s take on Oteil & The Peacemakers‘ “Butter Biscuit” with Krasno leading the way on guitar. Other covers mixed into the performance included Jerry Garcia’s “Cats Under the Stars”; Grateful Dead‘s “Weather Report Suite”, “Let It Grow”, and “Cassidy” with guest Bob Weir;Â and The Allman Brothers Bands‘ “Dreams” and “Jessica” with Duane Betts sitting in on guitar. Betts had initially been welcomed to the stage to help the band play through “Cassidy”. The performance also saw Oteil treating fans to some originals in “Too Many Times”, “Water in the Desert”, and “Chasing”.
The show was not without its fitting birthday celebrations, which Bob Weir took upon himself to lead with a LOCKN’ sing-a-long of “Happy Birthday” towards the end of the set.
