Oteil Burbridge continued his mini-tour at the Brooklyn Bowl last night with his new project, “Oteil & Friends”. Featuring JGB keyboardist Melvin Seals, Furthur guitarist John Kadlecik, Primus/RatDog/Electric Beethoven drummer Jay Lane, former Nth Power and current Trombone Shorty percussionist Weedie Braimah, sensational vocalist Alfreda Gerald, as well as Joe Russo’s Almost Dead guitarist Scott Metzger filling in for usual guitarist Eric Krasno, the widely adored bassist treated the sold out crowd to a stunning performance that showcased a few choice cuts from the Grateful Dead canon.

The show opened with a dreamy delivery of Oteil’s new album title track, “Water In The Desert“, immediately illustrating the enormous talents on stage. From there, the band dug into some Grateful Dead classics, as well as a run through “Leave My Blues At Home” by the Allman Brothers Band. The first set closed with a huge cover of “Piece Of My Heart” by Janis Joplin.

The second set opened with jammed-out versions of “Eyes of the World” into “It’s Your Thing” by the Isley Brothers, before moving into a beloved take on “Scarlet Begonias” into “Sugaree” and a funkified rendition of “I’ll Take You There”. Covers of Bob Dylan, The Band, and Creedence Clearwater Revival highlighted the end of the extended second set. While the setlist pulled heavily from the catalogues of others, each composition was given its own tweaks in the O-Zone.
