On Sunday, October 21st, Willie Nelson‘s traveling Outlaw Music Festival made its way to the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles for the final stop on its lengthy 2018 schedule. The day’s schedule featured performances by Nelson as well as Phil Lesh & Friends, Sturgill Simpson, Lukas Nelson + Promise of the Real, Margo Price, and Particle Kid.
This special Outlaw Music Festival stop marked the event’s first outing on the west coast, so the addition of a new artist to the Outlaw stable, California musical heavyweight Phil Lesh of Grateful Dead fame, served as an appropriate inclusion. Following Particle Kid, Lukas Nelson, Margo Price, and Sturgill Simpson’s sets, Lesh took the stage with his “Friends” of the day—Jackie Greene, Jason Crosby, Nathan Graham, and Cris Jacobs—for the evening’s penultimate set. Phil’s nine-song set featured a spirited mix of Dead favorites including “Althea”, “New Minglewood Blues”, “Brown-Eyed Women”, “Candyman”, “China Cat Sunflower”, “Shakedown Street”, “Viola Lee Blues”, and “Sugaree”. For their final song, Phil Lesh & Friends welcomed Margo Price to the stage to help them through “Turn On Your Love Light”.
Following Phil’s set, Willie Nelson & Family closed out the show with a headlining set of their own featuring, among other highlights, a rendition of Larry Davis– and Joseph Wade Scott-penned classic “Texas Flood” (popularized by Stevie Ray Vaughan) with the Lone Star flag emblazoned across the backdrop of the stage. He also welcomed out Lesh and Price at the tail end of the set to add vocals to “I Saw The Light”, “I’ll Fly Away”, and “Will The Circle Be Unbroken”.
