On Saturday night, Georgia jam-rock quartet Perpetual Groove continued their 2019 fall tour with a performance at Gramercy Theatre in New York City. The tour comes in continuing support of their self-titled 2019 album, which marked their first full-length record since 2009’s Heal as well as the first LP featuring the group’s classic lineup of guitarist Brock Butler, keyboardist Matt McDonald, bassist Adam Perry, and drummer Albert Suttle since 2007’s LiveLoveDie.

Perpetual Groove – Perpetual Groove – Full Album

Following an opening set by People’s Blues of Richmond, Perpetual Groove took the stage and kicked off their set with the opening song on the new record, “Part Three“, which deals with the loss of Brock Butler’s sister one year ago. You can read Brock’s reflections on the track below:

LiveLoveDie track “Two Shores” was up next, followed by another Perpetual Groove track in “Spirit Bear”. From there, the band segued smoothly into “Upswing” and, in turn, “Three Weeks”.

Another song from the new album, “Down In”, came next followed by fan-favorites “Cairo” and “Walkin’ In Place”. Next, the band dove into their first cover of the night: a dark, pulsating reading of Nine Inch Nails‘ “Closer”. After the crowd roared along to the song’s famously explicit, animalistic lyrics, Perpetual Groove closed out the main portion of their set with a seamless string of songs in “Break the Silence” > “A. Retro” > “Robot Waltz”.

After opening up their encore with another new song, “Eventually”, the band wound their way into “Lemurs” before closing strong with a moving cover of David Bowie‘s “Heroes”.
