Video has emerged online of The Who guitarist Pete Townshend performing “Drowned” in Meherabad, India way back in January 1976. The band shared archive video footage of the solo acoustic performance to their YouTube page on Monday, which showcases a young Townshend as he plays the song from The Who’s 1973 Quadrophenia album to a small group of Eastern mysticism followers.

The video includes the supporting info, “Pete Townshend performs ‘Drowned’ for Meher Baba devotees in Meherabad, India in 1976. This was his second and last visit to India when he accompanied Delia De Leon who had first met Baba in the 1930s.”

As JamBase notes, audio of this outdoor acoustic performance was featured on the band’s 2018 Who Came First reissue.

The Who released their first studio album of new material in 13 years this past December with WHO. The band had planned to continue their ongoing MOVING ON! Tour into 2020 with concert dates originally set for the spring months, but those shows were canceled with the arrival of COVID-19 in March.
