Phish returned to The Mann Center for Performing Arts last night, completing their two night run at the Philadelphia venue. While the first night was highlighted by unexpected song selection (including a “Skin It Back” bust-out mashed up with “Martian Monster”), the second concentrated on fewer songs and longer jam sessions.

Phish Delivers A (Martian) Monster Performance At Philly Opener

The show opened with the tour’s first “AC/DC Bag”, kicking things off on a high note with the energetic track. That segued straight into “Free”, another high energy tune that kept the Mann crowd dancing. “Ya Mar” offered a reggae beat, while the following “Sample In A Jar” cooled things down and kept things loose.

Next up was a cover of the Talking Heads song, “Cities”, played for the first time this tour. “Stash” followed, with “Birds of A Feather” and “The Line” keeping the first set in proper order. “It’s Ice” came next, returning for the second time after the tour-debut-heavy Sunday night show in Alpine Valley.

Phish returned from setbreak with “Bathtun Gin”, setting the pace for a jammed out second half. Playing only five songs, the group focused on tight jamming and stretched out a number of familiar tracks, including the new song “No Men In No Man’s Land”, “Twist”, “Scents And Subtle Sounds”, a tour debut, and “Harry Hood”. “Twist” was the real improvisational highlight of the frame, with 22 minutes of all four Phish members feeding off of each other perfectly.

After an encore “Loving Cup”, Phish said goodnight to the Philadelphia phans. They’ll head to Walnut Creek Amphitheatre in Raleigh, NC to resume touring this Friday, August 14th.
