Phish returned to Hollywood Bowl on Saturday for the penultimate show of the band’s brief West Coast spring tour. Among the highlights of Phish’s second of three shows in Los Angeles were standout versions of “Ether Edge” and “Everything’s Right” that anchored each set.

Saturday’s show was mostly devoid of any sizable jams, with just two songs in the first set over the double-digit minute marker. Instead, Trey AnastasioJon Fishman, Page McConnell, and Mike Gordon fired off quick hits of “Runaway Jim”, “Blaze On”, “Martian Monster” > “Birds of a Feather”, and “555”. As the sun came down over the Hollywood Hills, Phish opened up the “Divided Sky” before diving into “Ether Edge”. This 18-minute version spent most of its time in a fun, light, and bouncy mode that would’ve been just fine, but about 12 minutes in, it turned dark and proggy thanks to Fishman bringing the hammer down on the cymbals. Trey responded with his low octave pedal and the last six minutes of the song became some very exciting Evil Phish.

Things got a bit more elongated in the second set, which ran unabated for 47 minutes through “AC/DC Bag”, “Life Saving Gun”, “Oblivion”, and “Run Like An Antelope”—any of which would’ve made fine jumping off points for deep improvisation but never quite took off. Following a serene “Beneath a Sea of Stars Part 1” below the starry skies of Los Angeles, Phish finally dug in with an “Everything’s Right” set closer. At just 15 minutes, it was the second-longest song of the show. What it lacked in length, it made up for in character. What started as a shimmering, twinkly jam opened up into more of the delightfully chaotic prog-rock from the “Ether Edge” in set one, ending the second set on a high note.
