On Tuesday night, Phish returned to Madison Square Garden for the fourth night of their Baker’s Dozen run after a well-deserved night off. The donut theme of the evening was “Jam-Filled,” and the group delivered on this promise, putting on an instant classic of a show, which kicked off with a five-song first set. While across the board, the show was stellar, one of the most hyped-up moments of the night came at the start of the first set. Following the show opener of “Sample In A Jar,” Phish offered up a historic “Lawn Boy,” which clocked in at just around the half-hour mark.

Everyone loves a good coming-of-age tale, and Tuesday night, “Lawn Boy” became a “Lawn Man,” much to the surprise and delight of fans packed in the Garden and across the country. After Page McConnell welcomed the crowd with a quick “Good evening, everybody,” Page quickly started in on the verse, eventually turning it over to Mr. Mike Gordon, who began running through his usual bass solo with a particular focus. However, as the song unfolded, it quickly became apparent that Phish had something special in store for “Lawn Boy” on this jam-filled evening. After Mike’s extended solo, rather than Page, Trey Anastasio jumped in on the vocals, giving the Chairman of the Boards time to grab his keytar for his own run at the song’s theme, eventually blooming into an unprecedented jam that went on and on, ranging from crunchy funk to melodic to ambient and all the spaces in between.
