Phish‘s The Story of the Ghost album is set to be released on vinyl as part of Record Store Day‘s Black Friday event on Friday, November 29th.
The Story of the Ghost is Phish’s seventh studio album, which was released on October 27th, 1998 via Elektra Records. Produced by Andy Wallace, the Vermont-bred quartet recorded the 14-song album over several sessions at Bearsville, NY’s Bearsville Studios, the same location the band recorded their 1996 Billy Breathes LP. Tracks from The Story of the Ghost writing sessions that didn’t make the cut went on to appear on The Siket Disk, Trampled by Lambs and Pecked by the Dove, and much of Farmhouse.

The tracklist for The Story of the Ghost includes “Ghost”, “Birds Of A Feather”, “Meat”, “Guyute”, “Fikus”, “Shafty”, “Limb By Limb”, “Frankie Says”, “Brian and Robert”, “Water In The Sky”, “Roggae”, “Wading In The Velvet Sea”, “The Moma Dance”, and “End Of Session”. “Birds of a Feather”, “Frankie Says”, and “Shafty” were all debuted during the band’s infamous 1998 Island Tour, which gave the band a break from recording the album.
Live rarities from the album include”Fikus”, which was played five times in ’98 and hasn’t seen the light of day since, and “End Of Session”, which was debuted by the band at their red-hot “Jam Night” as part of their 13-night Baker’s Dozen Madison Square Garden residency in 2017. “Shafty”, a reworked rendition of Phish original “Olivia’s Pool”, has been played five times since its Island Tour debut, and only once during the band’s “3.0” era.
