Phish returned to the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA for the first time since 2009, playing to a sold out crowd at the beautiful outdoor venue. While the band ceased debuting new material after their seven debuts in Bend, OR, the group offered plenty of their material, old and new, throughout a night of phantastic music.
“The Line” provided ample room for the band to get warmed up, and they fully let loose in the next two numbers, “The Moma Dance” and “Kill Devil Falls”. The Mike Gordon-penned “Yarmouth Road” kept things light, while “Undermind” brought some funk out to the first set.
The final three numbers of the first set were arguably the best, as “Free”, “Reba” and “46 Days” was a dominant 1-2-3 punch. The “Reba” was particularly noteworthy, with some elegant jamming led by Trey Anastasio and Page McConnell. Drummer Jon Fishman was clearly in the zone as well, and this band is playing as tight as ever.
After the setbreak, the band dug into one of their new Anastasio/Marshall originals, “Blaze On”. Clocking in at over 15 minutes, this version had all the exploratory jamming one could ever want. The playful song gave way to some serious tones, segueing seamless into “Twist”. Woo! Another extended jam session came out of “Twist”, as that song is a funky jam vehicle, winding into the 2009 tune “Light”. With a section that had a strong “I Know You Rider” feel, the great improvisational second set kept rolling remarkably.
“Light” segued into “Joy”, giving the band a much needed tempo reprieve. The song was a touching interlude in the second frame, but the subsequent “Harry Hood brought it right back to business. We did, indeed, feel good about Hood. “Cavern” took its place in the set closing role, and “Character Zero” provided the energetic encore to close out this remarkable performance at the Shoreline.
