Hours after the completion of another successful Daze Between New Orleans festival, many players from the second annual event raced over to the historic Tipitina’s for a special set by the Daze Between Band. The sold-out show at the iconic New Orleans club featured members of The Meters, Goose, Lettuce, Dumpstaphunk, and more.
With Goose wrapping its headlining Daze Between New Orleans set at 9:30 p.m. and the Daze Between Band after-show starting at 10, it was a mad dash from the Faubourg Brewery across town to Tip’s. Luckily, DJ Soul Sister was there to start the party before the one-off supergroup hit the stage.
The intimate stage was in constant motion as a cavalcade of guests shuffled onstage and off. The personnel included returning Daze Between Band leader Eric Krasno and New Orleans icons such as The Meters bassist/vocalist George Porter Jr., Dumpstaphunk’s Ivan Neville (keys, vocals) and Tony Hall (bass, guitar, vocals), and former Dumpstaphunk drummer Raymond Weber. The horn section featured Jennifer Hartswick (Trey Anastasio Band), Ryan Zoidis (Lettuce), and trombonist Alex Wasily (Dumpstaphunk), and making their Daze Between Band debuts were Goose’s Rick Mitarotonda (guitar, vocals) and Peter Anspach (guitar, keys, vocals).
Even during Jazz Fest in New Orleans, the Daze Between Band stood out as one of the most memorable super-jams the city had to offer, with pillars of the local music community playing alongside longtime admirers and even some new visitors. The setlist cycled through a wide range of covers that drew from funk to classic rock to jam band classics including Rick James, The Band, Led Zeppelin, Jerry Garcia, and more. One of the highlights included Jennifer, Ivan, and Eric splitting vocals on “After Midnight”, a song that may as well serve as an anthem for New Orleans during the many late-nights of Jazz Fest.
