The Wood Brothers took in the views from New York City’s scenic The Rooftop at Pier 17 on Friday with a show featuring Shovels & Rope. The concert at the rooftop venue overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge culminated with a joint cover by the two acts of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers‘ “Yer So Bad”.
The dreary overcast skies evidently took a toll on the crowd, emanating a passive energy that caught the attention of frontman Oliver Wood. He empathized with the audience throughout the show, sharing in their lament that it was Thursday and they had to work tomorrow. The only problem was, it wasn’t Thursday. It was Friday.
This carefully calculated twist of date caused the audience to perk up time and time again, with shouts of “It’s Friday! I don’t have to work tomorrow!” Oliver grinned from the stage, aware of exactly what he had done as he resurrected the crowd time and again.
In addition to the Petty cover, another highlight of the show came with a mashup of the original “Happiness Jones” with Charles Wright‘s oft-sampled “Express Yourself”. Later on, during the encore, Oliver Wood, Chris Wood, and fellow Wood brother Jano Rix brought out their “tour family,” Shovels & Rope, for the customary encore collaboration, this time opting for the Full Moon River classic “Yer So Bad”. Previous encore covers from throughout the tour have included John Prine‘s “That’s The Way That The World Goes ‘Round”, Creedence Clearwater Revival‘s “Down On The Corner”, and more.
