On Saturday night, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong brought their sold-out three-night run at Brooklyn Bowl to a close with yet another memorable performance. With two Brooklyn shows already under their belt, the band was noticeably looser than in previous nights, delivering well-realized and harmonically interesting jams throughout the show and peppering the setlist with a number of fun sing-alongs.

The show opened with upbeat renditions of “Pop Off” and “Poseidon” before vocalist/guitarist Greg Ormont gave the inebriated members of the crowd his best Cinco de Mayo wishes with “Drunk People”, featuring some soaring soloing from Jeremy Schon (they would later tip their hats to the Cinco de Mayo festivities once again with a well-received jam on the oft-referenced Latin-rock classic, “Tequila”). The evening continued with a jammed-out “Landing” and a cover of  “Rock and Roll” that hewed more closely to the co-opted live Phish staple than the original The Velvet Underground track before “Funk E Zekiel” and “Julia” brought set one to a close.

The second set kicked off with funky instrumental “J-Town” and the impending insanity of “Melting Lights”, which moved into “Fade Fast”. “High As Five” came next, beginning a medley that would move into a fun and funky rendition of Michael Jackson‘s “P.Y.T.” and, subsequently, a cover of “Pinball Wizard” from The Who‘s Tommy (“That deaf, dumb, and blind kid sure plays a mean PING PONG!”) before landing back in “High As Five” propelled by drummer Alex Petropulos and bassist Ben Carrey.

The band was on a roll for the remainder of the set, moving through renditions of “The Liquid”, “Henrietta”, and “Skipjack” before capping things off with a “Zydeko” encore.

Next up for Pigeons Playing Ping Pong is Domefest, their annual festival, set to take place May 17th-19th in Bedford, PA. For more information on Domefest, head here.
