On Friday, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong released “High As Five”, the third single from their forthcoming album, Presto. The perpetually upbeat groove follows fellow Presto singles “Dawn A New Day” and “King Kong“.
The song finds Pigeons deploying their tried and true formula of funky bass rhythms courtesy of bassist Ben Carrey and drummer Alex “Gator” Petropulos as guitarist Jeremy Schon provides soaring leads and frontman Greg Ormont keeps everything in balance with heartfelt lyrics and vocal undulation. After the first couple of verses, the song breaks down into an instrumental segment that will prove to be the highlight of any live performance. Complete with a built-in jam breakdown which builds to a climax before returning to the chorus, “High As Five” seems primed to serve as both a sing-along anthem and a reliable jam vehicle for Pigeons Playing Ping Pong.
The song should seem familiar to fans who have seen Pigeons over the past few years, as it has already become a live staple. The first known rendition dates back to December 30th, 2015 at The Broadberry in Richmond, VA. The band has given “High As Five” regular love in setlists since then. Along with several other tracks on Presto, “High As Five” showcases the band’s ability to reverse engineer a live staple into a polished studio track.
