Previously unreleased Super 8mm footage shows the May 7th, 1977 Pink Floyd show from California’s Anaheim Stadium. The rare bit of bootleg video comes from the band’s In the Flesh tour, also known as the Animals Tour.
Published by YouTube archivist The Pink Floyd Research Group, the ten minutes of footage capture portions of “Wish You Were Here”, “Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts VI–IX”, and “Money” from Floyd’s second of two nights outside L.A. Recorded by an unknown cinematographer, the video features significant footage of David Gilmour‘s pedal steel solo on “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” (with touring guitarist Snowy White on rhythm) and saxophonist Dick Parry‘s entire “Money” saxophone solo.
Given the time period and surreptitious nature of the recording, the video is considerably high quality. The audio in the clip comes from a mix of the sound captured by this camera and another bootleg audio source. This footage adds to other previously published videos from this same show captured by another source, which The Pink Floyd Research Group plans to stitch together.
The 1977 In the Flesh tour was the only tour where Pink Floyd performed both 1975’s Wish You Were Here and 1977’s Animals in their entirety. Oddly, however, this newly published footage does not include any Animals songs.
“It’s important to address the elephant in the room… where the hell is Animals?!” The Pink Floyd Research Group wrote in the video’s description. “Well, we have no idea. We have gone through all of this guy’s film reels and have found zero trace of any other Pink Floyd segment. Given these are all huge 400ft reels, it’s safe to say that this is all he shot. The working theory is that, like Mike Russell who filmed source 1, sat far back and wasn’t able to move closer until later on. So while it is indeed very, VERY odd that someone would go to a concert that is mostly promoting the Animals record and not film any of Animals, there is very little to complain about given how breathtaking this footage is. It’s indisputably the best public footage of all three of these songs. We hope you can see why.”
This latest upload adds to a growing cache of 1977 Pink Floyd footage. Last year, TPFRS published clips from shows in Munich, Dortmund, Berlin, Montreal, Cleveland, Anaheim, and nearly 20 minutes of footage from Vienna. The new video closely follows Wish You Were Here 50, an official re-release with studio rarities and live recordings from Pink Floyd’s April 26th, 1975 show at the Los Angeles Sports Arena, restored and remastered by English prog-rock godfather Steven Wilson.
