Brooklyn-native jam quartet PEAK returns this fall with its second studio album, Choppy Water, due to arrive in full on October 14th.
The band—Josh T. Carter (bass/vocals), Jeremy Hilliard (guitar/vocals), Johnny Young (keys/vocals) and Kito Bovenschulte (drums/percussion/electronic drum sequencing)—features members of various familiar acts in the jam scene including Hayley Jane & The Primates (Carter), Turbine (Hillard), and Particle (Bovenschulte).
On Choppy Water, the outfit applies its groove-based psychedelic rock approach to dalliances with funk, electro-pop, prog, Americana, and the spirit of the blues making for a distinct musical brew.
Recorded at Horizon Sound Studios in Brooklyn throughout 2020 and 2021 with engineers Johnny and Michelle Young and mixed by Jason “Jocko” Randall (Turkuaz/ Jimkata/ Dopapod) at Moresound Studios in Syracuse, NY, the material on Choppy Water was culled from years of songwriting and road-testing, presenting listeners with a lived-in snapshot of the band at this moment in time.
Today, ahead of the album’s release, Live For Live Music is thrilled to premiere its lead single and opening track, “When The Night Comes Calling You”.
Says Jeremy Hillard of the lead single, “We picked ‘When The Night Comes Calling You’ because it’s a fan favorite, the story’s a bit on the dark side, and it encapsulates the meeting of the various stylistic influences on the album.”
The four-and-a-half-minute track blasts forward with untz-y, jamtronica momentum through moody synths, anthemic vocals, and reverb-loaded guitar riffs toward Hillard’s emphatic closing guitar solo. The lyrics “when the night comes calling you, you’ll be on your way” foretell a long, winding sonic journey to come on Choppy Water.
