Leon Toye, guitarist and mastermind behind the all-star collaborative studio project Toyesauce, is back with a fresh take on the Meters classic “Give It What You Can” featuring original Meters bassist George Porter Jr.

With additional contributions from New Orleans luminaries Ivan Neville (Dumpstaphunk, Neville Brothers), Tony Hall (Dumpstaphunk, Harry Connick Jr.), Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph (Galactic, Tank and the Bangas), Stanton Moore (Galactic), and Big Sam (Big Sam’s Funky Nation), plus Nashville all-stars Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band), Emmanuel Echem, Troy Atkins, Amber Woodhouse, and Jannelle Means, Toyesauce’s 21st-century update to the 1977 track captures the spirit of the original while harnessing the power of modern studio advancements to unite a dream team of players from different corners of the country. In total, six of the musicians are based in New Orleans and the other six are in Nashville. Each musician recorded remotely over base tracks laid down by Toye and bassist Kenny Jackson at Toye’s home studio in Nashville, and with the help of a little studio magic, the result sounds as alive as the original Meters version.

“Since first listen, I’ve loved the Meters version of this song and thought it would be a blast to recreate, particularly with an end-of-the-song instrumental jam,” Toye said of the new single.

Covering a band as revered as the Meters comes with a host of risks and challenges, which Toye navigated with assistance straight from the source. In addition to George Porter Jr., Toye consulted with original songwriter Jimmy Tarbutton, who co-wrote the tune along with Steve Cropper and Carl Marsh. Tarbutton happily gave his blessing, and after a two-year process of collaboration and remote sessions, the final product surpassed all expectations.

The new Toyesauce single arrives today exclusively via Live For Live Music. The track follows Toye’s recent genre-blending single “From The Barrel” and is available for streaming on all major platforms. To learn more about Toyesauce, head here.
