Primus Drummer Auditions Heating Up With Stewart Copeland, Danny Carey, Nikki Glaspie, Rory Dolan, More [Videos]

As Primus continues its search for a drummer to take the throne left vacant following Tim “Herb” Alexander‘s departure, the band has been sharing daily updates, and the auditions are really starting to heat up.

Early contenders included fan favorite Rory Dolan, who has received a groundswell of support from many who think his experience with lespecial makes him a shoo-in for the role, and heavy-hitter Thomas Pridgen, best known for his explosive drumming with the Mars Volta. On day two of the auditions, Primus welcomed studio beat-makers Mike Stone and Stan Bicknell, followed on day three by prolific Nth Power drummer Nikki Glaspie as well as Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio‘s Sam Groveman and renowned drum educator John Hoffman.

Hungarian drummer Gergo Borlai apparently was the only one to audition on day four, but day five was assuredly the highlight thus far, with a star-studded lineup of Stewart Copeland (The Police, Oysterhead), Danny Carey (Tool), and master session drummer Thomas Lang taking the throne, not to mention actor Bob Odenkirk and a drummer that appears to be Fred Armisen in disguise (who some thought looked like former Dream Theater drummer Mike Mangini).

It is unlikely that all of the day five applicants were legitimate auditions, with some fans speculating that Lang may have been the only serious prospect. In any case, Primus unsurprisingly has an incredible list of drummers to choose from, and the decision seems to only be getting harder.

So far, Primus has only shared teaser clips set to music, leaving fans eager to hear the drummers play with their potential bandmates Les Claypool and Larry LaLonde, but the band previously promised, “Once we begin to narrow things down, we will be posting our progress along with audition performances with the band, and special celebrity drum review committee discussions on the PRIMUS YouTube channel.”
