During a recent stop on Primus‘ first official tour with newly minted drummer John Hoffman—the Onward & Upward Summer Tour—the band surprised fans with a tribute to one of its most beloved and bewildering works, 1997’s Brown Album, at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO.

Following an opening set from Ty Segall, Primus starting things off with the venue-appropriate “Harold of the Rocks” and “Groundhog’s Day” before frontman Les Claypool addressed the crowd:

“We decided this afternoon to do something you’re really going to love—or you’re really going to hate,” he warned. “We’re going to play 7 songs off the Brown Album.”

The band proceeded to “Fisticuffs”, “Golden Boy”, “Duchess And the Proverbial Mind Spread”, “Over the Falls”, “Restin’ Bones”, “Bob’s Party Time Lounge”, and “Shake Hands With Beef” and finished the set off with “Welcome to This World”, “My Name Is Mud”, “Bob”, and “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver”. The encore featured additional fan favorites “Too Many Puppies”, “Dirty Drowning Man”, and the tour’s first “Southbound Pachyderm”.

The following night, the tour made its way to The Salt Shed in Chicago, where Primus shuffled the setlist, opening with “Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers”. The band also debuted “Amos Moses” by Jerry Reed, per Setlist.fm.
