A new Prince documentary, “Prince’s Last Year”, is on the horizon–complete with new interviews, footage from his final shows, and discussions on the days leading up to his untimely death. The documentary is commissioned by British broadcaster Channel 4, and will look at the last twelve months of the Purple One’s life. During those months, he went on a solo Piano & A Microphone tour, performed a private gig at The White House, and struggled with a secret, life-ending addiction to painkillers. The documentary provides footage of the year’s defining moments, as well as interviews with CeeLo Green, George Clinton and Rev Al Sharpton.

When Prince died at 57 years old in April of 2016, he had sold over 100 million recordings during his enormously successful career. The one-hour documentary will provide insight to his life, the positive impacts he sought to have on politics and activism, and the unfathomable ways he dealt with pain. The interviews regarding his addiction are with friend and political commentator Van Jones, singer Eryn Allen Kane, and former girlfriend Andy Allo.

Produced and directed by Adrian Sibley (“The Kate Bush Story: Running up That Hill”), the documentary does not stand alone in Prince-themed films on the way. Standing in line with biopic, “Prince: R U Listening?”, and concert-based film “Sign O’ The Times,” which Prince directed, the forthcoming “Prince’s Last Year” will provide only a snapshot of the ever elusive Prince.
When his cause of death was confirmed as an opioid overdose, fans were shocked by the news. While always mysterious, Prince was never associated with drugs during his career. Later reports would offer the understanding that his addiction was a result of hip pain that accumulated over his career of live performances. Regardless of how he died, Prince will always be remembered for his true devotion to crafting and performing music. RIP Prince.
