Red Hot Chili Peppers have released their 13th studio album, Return of the Dream Canteen. The 17-track album marks the group’s second new LP of 2022 following April’s Unlimited Love.

Culled from the same Rick Rubin-produced sessions that begat Unlimited LoveReturn of the Dream Canteen continues the long-awaited reintroduction of guitarist John Frusciante, who re-joined the band in 2019 following a ten-year absence. The current stint marks Frusciante’s third tour of duty with Red Hot Chili Peppers (1988–1992, 1998–2009, 2019–present).

Red Hot Chili Peppers—comprised of Frusciante, singer Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea, and drummer Chad Smith—heralded the arrival of Return of the Dream Canteen with two pre-release singles, “Tippa My Tongue” and “Eddie“. The latter is a loving tribute to the late Eddie Van Halen.

“Sometimes we don’t realize how deeply affected and connected we are to artists until the day they die,” Kiedis said of the song. “Eddie Van Halen was a one of a kind. The day after his death Flea came into rehearsal with an emotional bassline. John, Chad and I started playing along and pretty soon with all our hearts, a song in his honor effortlessly unfolded. It felt good to be sad and care so much about a person who had given so much to our lives. Although the song doesn’t speak to Eddie by name, it talks about his early days on the Sunset Strip and the rock n roll tapestry that Van Halen painted on our minds. In the end, our song asks that you not remember Eddie for dying but for living his wildest dream.”

RHCP also celebrated the release of the new album with a music video for Dream Canteen track “The Drummer”. Watch the new visuals below.

The band has been busy on the road in 2022. In addition to an on ongoing global stadium tour featuring a number of high-profile guests and supporting acts, the Chili Peppers have recently performed a handful of intimate promotional gigs in smaller rooms like Hollywood’s Amoeba Music and Harlem’s Apollo Theater.
